Tailored investment strategies for pension schemes

A shifting investment, funding and regulatory landscape presents new opportunities for trustees and sponsors. Defined Benefit pension schemes are exploring a wider range of end‑game options, including running on to generate a surplus. Our highly experienced team, with backgrounds in investment consulting, liability‑driven investment and fiduciary management, draws on the full M&G toolkit across public and private markets to help pension schemes navigate and benefit from these opportunities.

How we can help you

Bridging the gap to buy-out

Strategies which deliver predictable cashflows, with additional returns to improve the funding position on the way to buy-out. We can invest in insurer friendly assets to ease the transition to buy-out and partially match provider pricing.

Maximising the benefits of run-on

Our CDI Plus solution can use an insurance policy wrapper to enable schemes to access the same flexible LDI strategies as an insurance company. This reduces the amount of cash and gilts the scheme needs to hold to support its LDI hedge, which can increase the return potential of the assets and the scope to generate surplus to share with members and the sponsor.

Rethinking the DB endgame

Improved funding levels are giving DB schemes greater choice over their endgame, prompting a fundamental question: could running on deliver better outcomes than traditional insurance-backed solutions?

In these videos, Gurbani Swanni-Leach, Head of Endgame Solutions at M&G Investments and Calum Cooper, Head of Pension Policy Innovation, Hymans Robertson, explore the potential upside and risks of run-on, examining where value may be created and the role investment strategy can play in determining outcomes for members and sponsors. They also consider different DB regimes, including run-on, superfunds and insurance, and how factors such as longevity risk and capital support can influence the endgame decision.
